About this bond
New Zealand Government Bonds (NZGBs) are the benchmark against which every other New Zealand dollar bond is priced. The April 2033 line is one of the most heavily traded nominal maturities, which means tight spreads and easy exit compared with almost any corporate issue.
NZGBs are not sold directly to the public. Retail investors buy them on the secondary market through a sharebroker, typically in parcels from $10,000. What you pay is the market price, not face value, so your actual return is the yield to maturity rather than the stated coupon.
Because the coupon is fixed and the term is long, the price of this bond moves noticeably when the OCR and long-term rate expectations shift. Held to maturity that price movement is irrelevant; sold early it is the main thing that determines your return.
Buying and selling before maturity
New Zealand Government Bond, April 2033 is bought and sold through a New Zealand sharebroker rather than direct from the issuer. You pay the prevailing market price plus brokerage, which is why the yield to maturity above differs from the 4.50% coupon.
Held to 15 April 2033, you receive the scheduled interest and face value at maturity, assuming the issuer meets its obligations. Sold earlier, you receive whatever the market pays that day — higher if interest rates have fallen, lower if they have risen. Listed does not guarantee liquid, so the prudent assumption is that you hold to maturity.
This bond ranks as direct crown obligation. Ranking determines where you stand relative to other creditors if the issuer runs into trouble, and it matters more than the headline rate.
